Wakina The Truth
by MII
Wakina: I’m African American mixed with Irish I'm originally from NJ now residing in Atlanta. I was born in Wayne, NJ raised by a single parent, my father was murdered when I was 9 years old but my mother held it down the best she could. I’m the only child from my mother so I was very spoiled…. l (laughs) and still is.
LCN: Where have we seen you before? Wakina: I had a feature in Playaz Circle ff Bobby V. “Can’t Remember” video. I was Ms. October calendar girl for Seagram’s Gin. I’ve done a few cover issues; FBM Magazine, OneTen, & Asis/Assets. I’ve been featured in SkinTones my first publication, Silk Magazine, Cred Magazine and my newest feature that I’m most excited about Black Men’s Magazine 40/40 Issue on stands now.LCN: Is modeling your full-time gig, or do you have another job? Wakina: At this point modeling is my full-time gig. I have to focus on one job at a time, so right now this is where all my attention is geared.
LCN: What would you have been if you had never modeled?
Wakina: Working in business administration or pursuing a career as a Social Worker.
LCN: Before you were a model what did you do?
Wakina: I worked for a non-profit law firm that helped indigent people.
LCN: What is it about your personality and your upbringing that makes you so passionate about modeling?
Wakina: Well I came from a family of models, my mother model when I was younger and I use to always love seeing pictures of her. I really wanted to start modeling when my Aunt took me to Barbizon with her and she won a competition for Best Adult Model. They were my inspiration to modeling, I use to be a tom-boy so seeing my Aunt walk run-ways and take beautiful pictures is what inspired me to do this and live out my dreams.
LCN: How did you become to be so comfortable in front of the camera?
Wakina: Modeling is my passion so it became natural, plus a little practice in the mirror helps too.
LCN: How did you feel taking off your clothes for the first time?
Wakina: Oh please I’m a nudist and love my body even my imperfections don’t stop me from taking my clothes off.
LCN: What was your first modeling assignment?
Wakina: Shooting for SkinTones Magazine.
Wakina: My favorite modeling assignment would have to be a photo shoot that I did working with one of the baddest urban glamour/fashion photographers in the game James Rich. Not only did he become my mentor and best friend, he was and still is my teacher. James will show you how to work a camera after hours of posing, our famous quote is “Shut Up and Pose. Working with him, I moved on to be featured in some of the hottest magazines and on-line modeling sites.
LCN: Did you pursue modeling with the hopes of being ANTM or on the runway? If so, how did you learn to accept your role as an urban model?
Wakina: Of course every little girl dreams of being ANTM or walking the famous run-ways in Milan/Paris but of course I went what was would work for me at the moment. I did run-way when I was younger but the urban modeling is what sky rocket my career.
LCN: Who introduced you to the urban modeling industry?
Wakina: That would have to be Ralph Lenard of Darealsafado Studios. He introduced me to it, (laughs), I remember when I first shot with Ralph I was so shy.
LCN: What has this year been like for you in terms of modeling work?
Wakina: Well each year is better for me, I started in 09. This year has brought me greater opportunities and assignments. I have a little funkiness up my sleeves, some mouth dropping work of mines will be out soon and I hope everyone will be ready for Wakina aka TruthIs007.
LCN: How much experience have you gotten as far as working with and meeting people in the industry?
Wakina: I’ve learned so much working with different photographers and people in the modeling industry. I try to take a piece of each person with me each time I create. I research and study models, photographers, just so I know what is expected of me and what is needed to produce a hot as image.
LCN: What has been your most memorable modeling experience? Wakina: It would have to be this most recent photo shoot I did with Arthur St. John, all I can say is “Rotate it and Wait for It”
LCN: As an urban model, you likely deal with stereotypes. Wakina: Which would you say is the worst? The number one stereotype is people thinking you may need to sleep or suck your way to the top. My work speaks for itself.
LCN: Do you think exotic dancers and pornstars stepping into the modeling industry create a negative stereotype for models that are only focused on being just models?
Wakina: I don’t knock anyone hustle, all I say is just stay in your lane.
LCN: Have you ever danced? If not have you ever considered it?
Wakina: (Laughs)…yeah right all I can do is two step….haha

LCN: Have you had to pass up any opportunities due to your morals and ethics? Wakina: Yes, one that I’m fighting now. I did a video shoot and the guy decided to put out still images of me on a site where he had porn stars. Like I said before I don’t knock anyone hustle but don’t display my work like I’m a smut or into that type of work. It’s true what they say all money isn’t good money. You live and you learn, just don’t affiliate me with the porn industry because that’s not my intentions. I’m a model and that’s what I love to do but when you try to slander my character, I will fight back. I want the world to see me for my beauty and what that side of me has to offer. Not on some smut shit (PERIOD)!
